What Spirit Are You Filled With? The Truth About Spiritual Influence and the Dangers of Emptiness

We are created by God to be spiritual beings, designed not only to connect with the Divine but to be filled with His presence. Our bodies, our minds, and our spirits are vessels—living, breathing homes for something greater than ourselves. Yet, if you are not filled with the Holy Spirit, it's worth asking: what spirit are you filled with? There is no such thing as being truly empty. Something is always influencing you, whether you are conscious of it or not. The spiritual realm is real, and as believers, we must understand that if we aren’t being led by the Spirit of God, we are leaving ourselves open to other, more sinister forces that seek to control and deceive.

No Such Thing as Emptiness

The idea that we can be spiritually "empty" or exist in a neutral state is one of the greatest lies the enemy tells. The concept of being void of influence or control, of being a "clean slate," is rooted in deception. This is especially dangerous in movements like New Age spirituality, which promotes practices such as "emptying your mind" or "achieving total control over your spirit." These teachings encourage a sense of autonomy, where individuals believe they can transcend their physical and spiritual limitations on their own. But the truth is, we are always being influenced by something—either the Spirit of God or the spirit of darkness.

In Luke 11:24-26, Jesus shares a parable that perfectly illustrates this point: "When an unclean spirit goes out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest. But finding none, it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first."

This verse clearly shows that there is no such thing as an empty vessel. When we try to "clear" ourselves of influence without the Holy Spirit filling that space, we leave the door open for the enemy to re-enter. The enemy seeks to fill any void, exploiting spiritual ignorance to bring darkness, confusion, and bondage.

The Illusion of Control: New Age Deception

New Age spirituality teaches that you can be the master of your own spirit and destiny, encouraging practices like meditation for "mind-emptying," energy work, and spirit guides. These may seem harmless on the surface, promising peace and enlightenment, but at their core, they reject the sovereignty of God and invite the enemy’s counterfeit spirituality into your life. New Age teaches people that they can control their own energy, their own spiritual state, and even bend the universe to their will. But that sense of control is an illusion.

In reality, the more you seek to empty yourself in these practices, the more you are actually pushing away God’s presence. Philippians 4:8 gives us the biblical directive of where our minds should dwell: "Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things." Scripture encourages us not to empty our minds, but to fill them with what is holy and righteous, to be transformed by the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2). When we step outside of this directive, when we create a void in our minds and spirits, we are doing the enemy’s work for him—we are clearing space for demonic influences to make themselves at home.

Filling the Void with the Holy Spirit

Jesus’ warning about the danger of an empty house is sobering, but it also points to a powerful truth: we are not meant to be empty. We are meant to be filled with the Holy Spirit, the very presence of God living within us. This is what keeps us anchored in truth, freedom, and peace. When we are filled with the Holy Spirit, there is no room for darkness to enter. Ephesians 5:18-20 tells us, "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Being filled with the Holy Spirit is an ongoing process—it requires constant communion with God, prayer, worship, and feeding on His Word. Unlike the practices of New Age that focus on self-empowerment, biblical spirituality teaches us to be empowered by God. The Holy Spirit is not a passive influence but an active, life-giving force that leads us into all truth (John 16:13), strengthens us (Ephesians 3:16), and helps us bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

Rejecting the Lie and Embracing Truth

It’s time to reject the lie that you can control your spiritual state on your own. We were never meant to walk this journey without God’s guidance, protection, and indwelling Spirit. If you are not actively pursuing God and asking to be filled daily by His Spirit, you may be leaving yourself vulnerable to the enemy’s schemes. Ask yourself: if I’m not filled with the Holy Spirit, what spirit is influencing me? What am I allowing into my mind and heart when I open myself up to the world's philosophies, to so-called "spiritual practices" that deny the power of God?

The truth is, there is only one safe place to be filled, and that is in the presence of God. Only He can fill us with the peace, joy, and purpose we so desperately seek. Every other spirit will leave us empty, deceived, and eventually destroyed. But God’s Spirit brings life, freedom, and the fullness of joy.

Conclusion: Choose to Be Filled with the Holy Spirit

If you're feeling spiritually empty or like you’ve been searching for fulfillment in the wrong places, today is the day to surrender to the Holy Spirit. Don’t be deceived by the world's promise of spiritual control or the idea that you can live in a state of neutrality. God is calling you to a higher place, to be filled with His Spirit, and to walk in His truth.

As Ephesians 3:19 says, God wants you to "be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God." This means that every area of your life—your mind, your heart, your soul—is meant to be saturated with His presence. And in that place, no other spirit, no matter how subtle or deceptive, can take root.

Don’t settle for the counterfeit. Seek the filling of the Holy Spirit, and you will walk in the freedom, peace, and joy that only God can provide. There is no emptiness in Christ—only fullness.
